Windom Meet 9/16

09/17/2013 09:33

It was a great day to run in Windom! We had 1st place team finishes out of our Boys Varsity and Boys Junior Varsity, a 2nd place finish out of our Girls Junior Varsity, a 3rd place finish out of our Boys Junior High, and a 4th place finish out of our Girls Varsity in the ten team meet.

Windom has all of the Junior Varsity and Varsity runners run together instead of seperating them into two different races like the majority of the meets will do. Because of this, every one of our girls competing ran in the same race. This meant our 7th and 8th graders would be jumping up in distance to the 4000 meters. They all handled the longer distance spectacularly! The girls finished in 4th, but were only 14 points away from the 1st place Mt. Lake. Haylee Sovell and Lauren Karnitz (both 7th graders) helped out in a big way as they finished 44th and 49th in their first ever Varsity race. Their addition looks like it will help with our overall depth on the Varsity. Kayla Huhnerkoch won the meet with a PR time of 14:51. Nicole Bunting (7th), Mary Fixsen (9th), Clair Hammerschmidt (47th), and Charli Miller (54th) all had big races for the girls Varsity as they all ran their season bests. Allie Spanovich cut 18 seconds off her best ever race as she helped out as the #2 JV runner. Jasmin Ovre, an 8th grader, led the JV with a time of 21:17.

With the larger numbers on the boys side, we still had our Junior High boys run in the JH race, which was just over a mile. They placed 3rd (only 3 points out of 2nd) behind Windom and Mt. Lake. Deon Estebo led the boys with a 4th place finish in 6:20. After converting times, 4 of the boys had season best races. Sam Fox improved his time by 5 seconds, Austin Vogland by 8 seconds, Sam Kahnke by 13 seconds, and Grant Liebl by 33 seconds!

The Junior Varsity and Varsity boys did race together, which benefitted a lot of the JV boys who had more competition to run with. Both teams took home the victory. Ryan Phillips won the race with a time of 16:36. Wes Peyerl (5th), Marshal Quast (10th), Jordan Opdahl (23rd), and Jacob Angermeyr (27th) all had PR's for the Varsity runners. Alex Amunrud (6th) and Josiah Passe (14th) also ran great races for the Varsity. Cole Gewerth (29th overall) was the top Junior Varsity finisher in the race and had a PR by 25 seconds. Boe Bidinger (33rd), Carter Menz (43rd), Macius Schroeder (55th), and Nate Benson (56th) all were scorers on the JV team. Macius had a PR of 27 seconds and Vaughan Johnson added in a PR of 55 seconds.

The boys and girls will have a second meet this week as we travel up to the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday. Both coaches and several parents will have to dust off the racing shoes as they will be racing in the "Old Timers" Race. Anybody out of High School there at the meet is welcome to compete in the 2 mile race!
