Milaca Mega Meet

09/23/2013 09:47

Thank you to all parents and other family that made the longer trip up to Milaca this weekend! It was especially fun having Lynn Huhnerkoch, Vikki Phillips, and Michael Fixsen join Coach Cilek and myself in the "Old Timers" race. The highlight of the meet had to have been having two Redwood runners winning their respective races, though. Both Ryan Phillips and Kayla Huhnerkoch won the Division A Varsity races, so we should be looking to get a T-Shirt next year with their names on it!!

We had athletes running in 5 different races on Saturday. The first of these races was our boys Junior High all running in the 8th grade boys race. There were 49 complete teams in their race, and our boys placed 19th. The boys were racing in their longest races of the year. It was a 2 mile course, 3/4 of a mile further than they have raced. Deon Estebo led the boys with a time of 13:27, placing 118th out of the 320 runners. Conner DeGonda, Spencer Gilk, Sam Fox, and Blake Hilde were the other scorers for the JH team.

The Varsity Girls were next on the course, placing 9th out of 28 teams. Many of our Varsity girls are continuously getting faster and faster every meet. Kayla, Nicole Bunting, Lauren Karnitz, Clair Hammerschmidt, and Haylee Sovell all had their best times of the year. Kayla actually set the school record with a time of 14:46 when she won the meet. Nicole (16:09), Mary Fixsen (16:26), Lauren (18:16), and Clair (18:43) were the scorers for the Varsity team.

The Varsity Boys team raced to a 4th place team finish out of 31 teams. Ryan won the meet with a time of 16:23, outlasting two other runners within the last 1/4 mile. Wes Peyerl (17:40), Alex Amunrud (17:41), Marshal Quast (18:50), and Josiah Passe (18:56) were the scorers for the boys team. They were only 22 points away from taking home a trophy, which is not a lot in a field of 221 runners.

The Junior Varsity races are the biggest races of the day, as they include all JV runners from all four divisions. The Girls JV team placed 35th, led by Kirsten DeGonda (20:15). Many girls had their best races of the year: Kirsten, Julia Prouty, Taylor Haase, Jasmin Ovre, Tamarah Frank, and Bailey Bunting. Julia (20:45), Taylor (20:52), Jasmin (21:12, and Courtney Stoen (21:24) joined Kirsten as the scorers. There were 470 runners in the race. The Boys JV team had a strong race as they finished 19th out of 49 teams. Boe Bidinger (19:04 Season Best) had a great race, as he would have been our #6 runner on Varsity with his performance. Simon Grundermann (19:47 Season Best), Carter Menz (20:06), Cole Gewerth (20:23), and Nate Benson (20:23) were all scorers with Boe for the JV team. There were 583 runners in the race.

Next week, we will be having our home meet at the golf course! Come cheer on our Cardinals!!
